MIDI samples sound like buzzing/fluttering

I installed the latest version of LMMS on my 64-bit i7 quad-core laptop running Win 7. I tried installing it three different ways: the 64-bit app in Win 7, 32-bit app in Win 7, and 32-bit app in virtual Win XP. Same results each time: when I play MIDI instruments, whether synth or wavetable, they all sound like buzzing/fluttering of various pitches. Definitely NOT like MIDI instruments. (NOTE: I thereafter successfully played a MIDI file through Windows Media Player.)

Is my PC messed up, or does some important setting need to be changed, either in LMMS or in the OS?

Could be several reasons, but first :
What have you chosen as your sound-device?
eg under
edit| settings| audio-settings <audio-interface>
for most SDL is best choice as <audio-interface>

Thanks much, musikbear! That was the problem! I had set <audio-interface> to Port audio. Switching to SDL fixed the problem.

Any other settings that I, as a complete newbie to DAWs, should know?

Perhaps the buffer
edit| settings| general-settings <buffer>
i have 6400/145, and that gives a good ballance in lag
-But if i remember correct, that is the default setting -and it will be different depd. on pc, ofcause
Except that, and never use any UNI-CODE charachters in file folder and project names, i cant vome up with any
