Notice: could not set realtime priority

Having trouble with LMMS? Ask about it here.
I have used LMMS for over a year now (and love it!).

But, a few days ago LMMS stopped working and does not even load anymore. It first gives me an error: "Error while parsing configuration file at line 1:1: unexpected end of file". Then, after I click "OK", the LMMS icon initially loads, but then flashed briefly to the settings window, and then crashes instantly. When I run LMMS from the terminal, it gives me only a bit more information: first it says "Notice: could not set realtime priority", then after I click "OK" on the previous parsing error (above) it says "Segmentation fault". Even though I've used computers for ages and am comfortable working from the terminal, I am very inexperienced with debugging programs this complex. So, after some frustration and searching around on the web, I uninstalled LMMS, rebooted, then reinstalled the software. Same problem. I cannot think of any system changes I have made (new audio software installed, settings tweaked, etc) that could have affected LMMS like this.

I'm running on Ubuntu 10.04 (Lucid Lynx). I think I am now upto LMMS 0.4.13 (but I can't quite tell, since the program does not run for me), and I have a PPA established for:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/tobydox/lmms/ubuntu lucid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/tobydox/lmms/ubuntu lucid main

Any ideas/advice? I have been working on a lot of music lately and LMMS is my main composing software--so I'm feeling a bit creatively crippled here!

With hope and in solidarity,
dmw
I had the same problem. I installed version 0.4.13, and it would flash the settings window then crash.

I solved the problem by installing version 0.4.12 from the kxstudio team ppa.
http://ppa.launchpad.net/kxstudio-team/ppa/ubuntu

There seems to be an error with lmms version **13 in regards to Ubuntu version 10.04. I also had the same problem with my ubuntu 10.10 AND my windows XP, in which I had to install version **12 because **13 would either crash, or, in WinXP's case, not play sound or play it really slowly and garbled and loud.
Thanks Sketchman3, that seems to be a reasonable solution.... and it sounds like your error was almost exactly the same as mine! But, I don't think I know how to install previous versions via PPA. Everything I've tried upto this point (incl. Synaptic package manager, Ubuntu Software Center, and other PPAs) force installation of version 04.13. When I searched for the kxstudio via google, it listed the 0.4.13 version (as default?)... is there a way to force an install/update based on 0.4.12? Sorry if this is pretty simple/obvious, but I can't seem to figure it out. Thanks for any help you can provide!!
I got my link to the KXStudio-Team's PPA from the LMMS downloads page itself. I am able to share the link now. so I took the liberty of filtering the list to Lucid releases only, and navigating to the page that shows LMMS (as version 0.4.12-fixed) so you can see it.
https://launchpad.net/~kxstudio-team/+a ... &start=150

Firstly, uncheck the PPA's you used to install version 4.13. That will cause the Software Center to revert back to offering the default outdated version of LMMS (I think it's 4.5 or something, lol). Then, add the above repository, and you should be all set. You could actually add the repository first, then uncheck the tobydox ppas.

I think Software Center defaults to the PPA with the newest version of any package that is shared between PPAs.
After adding the PPAs from kxstudio, I ran the update manager. It added in a bunch of other programs, including Audacity, jackd, pulseaudio, VLC, Wine, etc.... but no LMMS. I think I might not understand PPAs as much as I thought I did previously. I though if a program was listed (as LMMS was) on the page you sent (which I had seen before my last reply), then it would automatically be added to the files to install. Is there a way to force it so only LMMS is installed (i.e. 0.4.12-0ubuntu1+fixed1~lucid1)? I installed the 19 meg or so of those other programs, anyway, but that had no effect. Still no LMMS.

The URLs I added to my "Software Sources" were:
deb http://ppa.launchpad.net/kxstudio-team/ppa/ubuntu lucid main
deb-src http://ppa.launchpad.net/kxstudio-team/ppa/ubuntu lucid main

Sorry my problem is requiring so much hand-holding...
Weird. That should work.

When you say no LMMS, do you mean no LMMS at all, or that it's the wrong version?

Are you using Synaptic or Software Center? (I suppose they both have the same packages, but you never know...)

I used the Software Center.

Since you are using an Ubuntu version higher than 9.10, you should click the "read about installing" and follow the instructions.

Open terminal and enter

Code: Select all

sudo add-apt-repository ppa:kxstudio-team/ppa
Let it do it's thing, then enter

Code: Select all

sudo apt-get update
To make sure everything's up to date.

Then the correct version of LMMS should show up in the Software Center. If that doesn't work, I'm at a loss. I'm not a Linux power user.
"Error while parsing configuration file at line 1:1: unexpected end of file"
I don't know what config files there are but I find one file, ".lmmsrc.xml", that you can rename like this:

Code: Select all

mv .lmmsrc.xml .lmmsrc.xmlBACKUP
Next time you try and start lmms the file will be recreated from a fresh template.
If you reinstall a package that is bugging you, files in the home catalogue is most likely not deleted, so if it is a problem with a file like .lmmsrc.xml it will probably be passed on to whatever version of lmms you try.
Thanks Sketchman3 for trying to help. Yeah, it wouldn't make available the 0.4.12 version in either Synaptic, Software Update Center, or the Update Manager. Very frustrating and confusing. The apt commands you provided did load other programs, but not LMMS (of any version). Strange indeed. When I tried installing the PPA, I used the instructions (as I often do) to make sure I'm getting the right version (Lucid, for me). I appreciate all your assistance, even though it did not work.

Owallgren: I never see those hidden files (of course), so I didn't even think there'd be stuff left-over, even after I uninstalled LMMS previously. I checked and the .xml file was there. I moved it (and backed it up) as you recommended, then reinstalled LMMS (directly from the Software Update Center, which was 0.4.13). Then I ran it and it worked fine. It did not crash. Very cool... Thanks for the insights!

I appreciate all the help folks!

I'm curious as to whether this issue was addressed in regards to WinXP's garbled sound in the latest version. I'd like to upgrade, but I'm afraid it's just going to mess up again and I"ll have to switch back to version 0.4.12 again again.
Here it is sketchman3. I hope this helps you and I hope this is what you're looking for.
