Lagging Sound!

Set up song and all was good. Added a few more parts & now the sound skips n cracks. What gives? Audio Interface is : Simple DirectMedia Layer, what should device settings be? What should buffer size be? I have an older PC but the program runs far less than 50% of CPU. Please help, I'm a musician, not a PC whiz apparently!! Thanks anyone
