5 Essential Tips to Create High-Quality Music on LMMS

Anything that doesn't fit into other topics goes here!

Hello, LMMS users! I'm P-titus, and I'm excited to share with you my knowledge on how to create high-quality music that meets professional standards using LMMS. This post will be packed with solutions, tips, and valuable information to help you take your productions to the next level.

Let's dive in!

Problem Solving

1. As you're aware, LMMS doesn't support all VST plugins, and it's not compatible with VST3. However, you can overcome this limitation by using a plugin called Element. For more information on how to use Element, I recommend checking out YouTube tutorials.

2. We all know that LMMS' stock instruments can sound toy-like and old-school. To elevate your music, consider downloading free or purchasing high-quality instrument plugins and effect plugins. Some excellent options include Purity, Keyzones, Sytrus, Korg, Si Bass Guitar, Synth, and Saxophia.

3. To add some flavor to your tracks, search for sample packs and loops on Google, filtering by genre (e.g., Reggae sample packs, trap packs, hip-hop sample packs). You can find some great resources online that offer free samples.

4. Instead of relying on LMMS' stock instruments, try using Soundfonts, which can simulate real-life high-quality instruments. There are numerous Soundfonts available online, so be sure to explore.

*Last Tip*

5. When loading a sample (such as a loop) into LMMS, avoid changing the project's tempo, as the sample's tempo won't adjust accordingly. Instead, use the Audio Processor to load the sample, and then open the Piano Roll within the Audio Processor. Draw the loop inside the Piano Roll, and you'll be able to easily adjust the tempo when needed.

By following these tips, you'll be well on your way to producing high-quality music on LMMS. You're welcome to check out my YouTube channel, "P-titus Concept," for additional tutorials and resources.

Yes Elements or Carla can load VST3 inside LMMS, but there are no options for automation!

These are really good tips. THANKS!

I appreciate the tips shared about using Element and Carla for loading VST3 plugins in LMMS. However, could you elaborate on the limitations regarding automation with these plugins?

Yes. When you use the veStige-plugin for real VST2 dll-files, you get a complete dial-array of all the VST2 controllers when you click on the wrench-icon (see picture). All these dials can be used inside an automation-track, and automated.
That is not the case for VST3 plugins. They does not have that dial-array, and cant have controller automated (atm..

LMMS is definately a lot of fun with WAV files. It can be basically used as a WAV sequencer.
On my own projects, I even use 32-bit floating point WAVs exported from Ocenaudio and/or other editors or DAWs or from LMMS's exports (reimporting). Of course LMMS can load vorbis OGG files. But you're not limited to those. The built-in file browser with it's drag-n-drop functionality really speeds up workflow. And as soon as you set the MIDI input, you can play those files chromatically (if you have a MIDI controller).
