Frequent crashes when using VSTs

Having trouble with LMMS? Ask about it here.

Steve
The funny part is that it does not matter if I have one synth1 or ten synth 1 in my project.

Usual it works for hours without a problem but then boom.
Or it crashes within seconds after I hit play, but then when I restart lmms all seems fine.

I have been thinking about installing debug tools, to see if I can find out what is happening.
The fact that it often works for hours without a problem is what makes it weird.

On windows lmms is as stable for me as on linux. It crashed for me on windows too if I use vst.
The one advantage , I have seen on windows is that more vst work on windows then on Linux.

The one thing I like about Linux though, if a program crashes it wont take down the rest.

I like to add something though, I am used to computer programs crashing. At work with cad programs and at home with games and such.
Last job I had, worked with Catia, great program but it does sometimes crash, and they have a few more developers then lmms. ;)

For those who I lost with Catia:

Its used for making models and drawing of about anything from a smart phone to an spaceship.
Currently I am tempted to turn off all updates on my pc.

At the moment LMMS is beyond stable. I am using it as a media player while I typing on this forum.
( project with 6 synth 1 tracks and three ZybAddSubFx tracks. cpu load only about 10% )

I also have google chrome open for an online game. At the moment its prob stable enough to do a live performance.

LMMS refuses to crash, and we cant say I am not trying. ;)

Just posted this to show my respect to the coders of lmms.

I have used three VSTs so far and they all have this problem (Helm, Dexed and the Sylenth1 demo).
I'm quite lucky with VSTs because most of those I need are working rather good with LMMS. A few will make LMMS unstable and crashing, but I'm rather satisfied with this.

But I'm replying to this thread because if you need Helm and Dexed, don't use VST, there are native linux LV2 versions of those engines, just use Carla Patchbay (on kx studio for example, I don't know on other OS) and import Dexed or Helm as plugin.
I use VSTs Spire, Dune 2, Synth1, Zebra2, Albino. I have also tested HEAPS of others like Predator, Cronox2 & 1 etc & have had excellent results, I just dont like them so much to use regularly They all seem pretty stable, except if you tweak Spire to far, it tends to turn off mid playing in playback & renders sometimes...and Zebra 2 "runs away" when using arpegiator in renders (becomes jumbled mess) ....

I wish I could get Sylenth to work, but not on Linux with Wine unfortunately, but seems to be more stable overall than the windows version (they are different builds, I haven't built the beta, I use 1.1.3)

LMMS looks great, and I really want to use it more. But every time I try to use a VST, the program crashes within minutes (sometimes seconds). I have no idea what cuases these crashes as they mostly seem spontaneous, however something that always causes the program to crash is changing the preset (this is true for both Sylenth1 and Helm).

I have used three VSTs so far and they all have this problem (Helm, Dexed and the Sylenth1 demo).

Sometimes I can use it (just avoiding the presets) and it will be fine, but sometimes it will crash really quickly.

Any ideas why?

If it helps, I'm using an A10 5800K,GTX 750 Ti and 8GB of DDR3 memory.

Thanks in advance :)
Alot of good advice has been posted. :D
How are the Vst's working now? Are they working well? :)
I've worked quite intensely with LMMS 1.13 and LV2 plugins (dexed), and it crashes quite often, almost at random, sometimes it's during replay (not very often), or when you drag and drop carla instruments into the song editor (very often). Dragging and dropping a carla instrument (favorite) onto another carla instrument is almost always a crash. Onto an other kind of instrument is 1/3 or 1/2 chance of crash. I don't really know if it's because of Carla or because of LMMS (or the conjunction of the two).

It's a pity because Linux + LMMS + Carla + LV2 = awesome!

And, as you already know, very unstable :p
Im not even sure its lmms that crashes, i think it may be carla too.
For now, using carla, almost points back to when lmms was really unstable
