I often want to compare notes in a bass line with notes in the guitar chords, and to this end, seing the 2 piano roll windows side by side would be of a great help.

You can't as far as I know. To get around this , I copy paste the notes from one piano roll to the other.

In pro tools ( best midi? Very good for midi scoring etc) the midi editor shows midi track choices in a list starting from the upper left of the editor window. With each having a box to check to view or not. And colors can be set, different to enable view per each.
