I am trying to save a project on a desktop file
Looks like you are not Administrator on your computer.
I believe you are using win10 (?)
Win10 uses a protection they call
windows-defender WD
WD disallow every write attempt on any part of win10, that has connections to installed files. I am a bit surprised, that this includes your desktop(?) -So are you actually NOT using win10???
Your HOME-directory is open for all write-operations, so with your project open select
File| save_as
Then browse to
C:\Users\<username>\Documents\lmms\projects
Give your project a name, and save
This folder is also the default place for saving all your projects!

Operative System (Windows/ Linux/ Mac) And subtype ('Home' 'Mint' '10.13' aso)

version
* lmms
sound device chosen
* hardware specification (ram & soundcard is the most important)
