Problem with midi keyboard (win 8.1)

I've used LMMS for several years but since Win 8 and 8.1 I've constantly had problems connecting an external keyboard. I've got the keyboard to show up in LMMS 1.1.3 showing up as "USB Midi Cable" under VST. However when a key is pressed nothing happens. Sound comes through via the computer keyboard just fine but not my external one. Frustrated as to what is causing this. I've looked through the forum and it sounds like it should work but it doesn't for me.

A midi keyboard is something completly different than a VST, it can't show up next to them.

If your MIDI keyboard won't send note data, there is a 8% chance its a driver/hardware issue rather than it being a LMMS bug.
