How can I get a gritty sound for instruments?

Having trouble with LMMS? Ask about it here.
I want to make a song that has the same gritty sound as BIKE (by Tanger), but I have no clue how to do it. Can someone tell me how I could do it?

Its hard to know what sound you are talking about
Find a video or soundclip online, with the exact instrument sound, you are looking for. -Link to it!
You need to add exact timestamps, for where the wanted sound starts, and less important -ends
You can click on the video, and choose to save the link at the specific time! or add a timestamp here
Like @2:32 -> 2:55
Then its much easier to advise good instrument

Besides that, since you are new in Forum

Hi,

I’m far to be a specialist but I understand “gritty sound" as a sound with a strong saturation and many distortions.

There is a LADSPA plugin I like, which may fit your need, maybe, it’s the C* preampIV -Tube preamp emulation - with tone controls. And a few others of the same kind.

It’s purpose is to emulate old tube based amp/preamp, but turning some knobs at high values (example: Gain or Amount, it produces a distorded sound that may be what you call “gritty. I’m not absolutely sure, as English isn’t my native language.

In french I could say: « un son sale » (a dirty sound literally)..

A last thing: I’m quiet sure “graveleux" is not an acceptable translation. One could talk of a song that is « graveleuse » it means the lyrics of the sound talk about sex in a vulgar, disgusting and offensive way. Like we have some « blagues graveleuses » (that I would translate by “salacious jokes”.

Have a nice day.
