Hi! A built-in sample slicer module SlicerT is available in LMMS nightlies. It's good.
If you use an old LMMS version that doesn't have it yet, try my Sapfir web app (source code) that lets you chop samples:
- import a song as a sample
- chop it with asdf... keys (like you would hit pads on hardware, including pressing the last key again repeatedly to aim for the next slice)
- delete zones that you don't need (zone key + x key)
- trim the unused beginning and end to make a smaller file (b and e keys)
- map the zones to specific note keys
- by default, "a" key becomes C1, "s" key becomes C#1, "d" key becomes D1... - matching MIDI drums
- adjust start and end positions with mouse
- export an .sf2 that you can use in LMMS, Ardour, Helio and other apps that support the SoundFont format
- import it later, tweak it and re-export as needed
Note: it's rather brutalist and is more of a "can I sample and make a full song using just my mobile phone, a keyboard and free software?" experiment. No undo support, for example.
An example of a beat I did with it as one of the instruments: Makepost - 92STVAR1, though my DAW for it was Helio not LMMS because I didn't have a laptop nearby at the time.
