Libre Music Making Software

Seems a more fitting acronym than the current name. (I've yet to see it deal with media other than audio/music, but it's not just Linux software even if that's where the primary development occurs.) This name also works as a "backronym". Which means many existing things stay relevant. No need to change website or confusion about what the software is.

Any other thoughts on this?

Might be something to consider if there's ever a re-vamp in the logo and such.

BUMPED

Recently on LMMS Discord server, a few of us had a semi-serious discussion on the current acronym LMMS and its (former) meaning.

In all seriousness though, I would prefer to use "LMM Studio" from now on instead, taking inspiration from FL "FruityLoops" Studio.
Taking the last letter and writing it out in full would hopefully remove some of the confusion and mysticism surrounding LMMS, as it currently has no official meaning.
People can still speculate about what LMM stands for, but at least they know that this is studio software, a Digital Audio Workstation.
Just like pauljs75's suggestion, changes will be minimal, and existing things will stay relevant.

But why should LMMS have any other meaning beyond itself, the software it refers to?

Branding, of course. Just because it's a free and open source (non-commercial) project doesn't mean it can do without a brand or meaningful name. I understand the reasons for dropping the old "Linux Multi-Media Studio", but keeping it void doesn't do it much justice.

I'm not sure how many people of the original development team are still actively involved with the project, but I'm sure they started it with a vision or goal in mind. That goal or vision should reflect in the name/brand, but since we have dropped "Linux Multi-Media Studio", and so far we haven't officially replaced it with something else, I feel it's better to have the "S" written in full, or at least I see no harm in it. I'm no conservative in this regard.

This isn't a random open source project with four random letters. This isn't a random free DAW. This is [insert a meaningful name/brand here].

The following article will hopefully give you an idea of where I'm going with this: https://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/librar ... s.85).aspx

Quoted from the article:

Design concepts

In a competitive marketplace, companies brand their products to help differentiate them from the competition. It would be naive to suggest that product branding in general is wrong or should be avoided, but it is fair to say that software branding is too often executed poorly. The goal of software branding is to associate the brand with the style and quality of the product and its experience. Too often, developers attempt to achieve this by drawing attention to the program itself. The result is to distract users instead of delight them.

Attributes of good software branding

When well done, software branding has these attributes:

Establishes a clear, distinct style and personality.
Creates an emotional connection.
Has high quality.
Is strategically placed and consistently executed.
Aligns to the overall brand strategy.
Is long lasting...as enjoyable the thousandth time as it was the first.

By contrast, poor attempts at software branding have these attributes:

Has no obvious theme or point.
Is in the user's face.
Is annoying.
Is everywhere.
Has a custom look and feel without any user benefit.
Becomes quickly tiresome.

LMMS might not be the best name out there, but the fact that we've all gathered here to argue about it means it's got impact.

Hm, I honestly think we need to take "Linux" out of the name, I've had people reject LMMS because it's Linux...and because people do no research, they miss out, I like Calros idea, though what would the LMM stand for? I'm bad with names, so don't ask me for one

EDIT: Me and my family just say "Lims"

Maybe the official homepage can help us out: https://lmms.io/

"Let's Make Music" it says. Let's = Let us

Finally, we have a vowel. :D

LMMS -> LuMMS or LUMMS

This way, the first four letters would stand for "Let us Make Music". Most people would naturally conclude that the last letter stands for Studio, or Software.

Was this ever meant to be the official full name?

I literally thought this as I was navigating my way through from the home page
