SID fine osc freq and no LB302 sound on MIDI

Having trouble with LMMS? Ask about it here.
Hello everyone, new LMMS user here.

As I'm new to both lmms and this forum, allow me to introduce myself. I'm a precision engineer and former drummer from The Netherlands who has dabbled in electronic music a bit many, many moons ago, roughly midway through the nineties. Back then, I used a Korg X5 and an Atari 1040ST with the ubiquitous errr... "unofficial" Cubase v2.01  . Both of these machines I still own. Ahhhh, the scent of nostalgia. The Yamaha CS1x I used to have has been sold, meanwhile.

Currently I'm gently trying to pick up music again. I figured I'd start out with a largely integrated solution and LMMS fit the bill perfectly. Awesome project, cool built-in plugins (especially ZynAddSubFX, which is totally insane), I love it. I'm still wrapping my head around the workflow but it seems to fall into place rather nicely. In the meantime, I've run into a few questions I couldn't readily find an answer to, so hopefully the forum members can help me out, here. Here goes!

1. In the SID plugin, I cannot figure out how to do detuning of the oscillators except for the CFR knob, which detunes by semitones, I believe. Is there any way to get more fine control of detuning?

2. The LB302 plugin doesn't respond to MIDI control by my MIDI keyboard, while other plugins I have tested don't have this issue. Is this the expected behaviour?

I'm looking forward to doing a lot more with this wonderful program, so do keep up the good work!

And a few rules for posting and using the right sub-forum :)

No you are correct, SiD does not have that feature. It is one of our oldest instruments, and i believe it is an emulation of the earliest commandore synth. Did that have fine detune? Idk :)

I dont own a midi kb, so i am i bit in the dark. Generally most mide-kb works with lmms, but there has been trouble with some, mostly older, and not usb connected kb. Weather LB302 has issues, i just dont know. I hope someone else will chime in, and help you there.

( I may incidently move your introduction to the right thread : )

Hi Musikbear,

Thanks for the swift response! AFAIK, "the" SID had 16-bit frequency control registers for frequencies ranging from 0 to 4kHz. I think it should be able to offer more resolution than semitones. :-) OTOH, I don't see this as a showstopper, although it would have been nice to fatten up the sound with some judicious detuning.

The keyboard I use is quite a recent controller, so I suspect the LB 302 is the culprit. I'll gladly be proven wrong, though!
LB302 works fine with my M-Audio Oxygen keyboard. It plays and records just like the other instruments. But that's on Windows 10.

Well - nothing to thank me for cause i diddent think it through. There is a way :p
If you have some speciel sound from a SID, but you like to detune one of the OSC, you could 'simply' use the PTICH setting on one instance

And then use more than one SID instance, but play both (all) simultaneous! Voila, detuned SiD :p

-Great info slipstick!
Awesome, I will definitely try these tips out.

Thanks for the valuable responses everone!
