Yamaha dx21 and LMMS

Anything that doesn't fit into other topics goes here!
Hello everyone. Noobie here. I am using a Roland um-one interface with a vintage synthetiser ''Yamaha dx21''. So far so good. I can use the keyboard like a controller but....but........ I need a little help here! Why can't I hear the sounds coming(included) in my synth? Whatever button I press on my synth, like the ''Strings'' or Grand Piano....no nothing in LMMS. LMMS makes it sound like a cheap piano, only one generic sound available. Getting better when I put some VST from the prog. But even when I choose a VST this little cheap piano sound is there in the mix, i mean like if there was a dual-split sound use? I know, I should try another decent controller, modern one lol.......but I don't have one now. Thanks in advance. :)
The UM1 interface is MIDI to USB. You're sending MIDI data into LMMS to drive the instruments in there. MIDI data is basically just information about the keys that are pressed, not the sounds from the DX21. So what the results sound like will depend on what instrument(s) inside LMMS you've connected the MIDI signal to. So that's the first thing...what exactly have you connected it to in LMMS ?

It's worth looking at https://lmms.io/documentation/Using_MIDI

But if you're really expecting to record the actual sounds produced by the DX21 that's a completely different thing. In that case you would need to send Audio not MIDI but in fact LMMS cannot record audio. You'll need a different program for that (and a different interface).
