Description:

Dynamic EQ
In this tutorial, you can see how to use Dynamic EQ with stock plugins only.

Dynamic EQ is used when you want to duck some frequencies out of the way of another sound, but not all frequencies as you will do with a SideChain Compressor. A case scenario would be having a PAD with low and high-end information, and when the bass hits you need to duck the PAD, but only the low-end of the spectrum.

All you need is a "peak controller" on the bass (in this case is in the Bass FX channel) and an EQ (in the Pad FX channel). When the Bass hits, the EQ duck only the low frequencies of the Pad but let the high end to shine ;-)
To do that, assign the peak controller to the gain knob of the frequency band you choose, and adjust the peak controller Base (normally at zero), Amount (to a negative value to duck the EQ) and Mult (if needed, for a drastic effect) to you needs. And that's all!

Sections explained:
- No Dynamic EQ: original sounds, without any effect. You can hear how some frequencies around 400Hz ot 500Hz are clashing.
- Dynamic EQ: a Dynamic EQ is set around 480Hz and you can hear more clear the bass because now have more "space" and also the Pad (open the EQ that it is on the Pad-FX Mixer channel to see it in action)
- SideChain Compressor: in this scenario, a sidechain compressor is used instead of Dynamic EQ. In this case, the entire Pad "disappears" when the bass hits and you can hear a clear pumping effect. Is not bad, if you are looking for this kind of effect.
- No Dynamic EQ with Drums: just adding a kick and HiHat to show it in context (the bass has a sidechain to the kick, though)
- Dynamic EQ with Drums: same as previous but enabling the Dynamic EQ. Both the bass and the Pad shine!

This technique can also be used to pump some frequencies when another sound hits (just turn the peak controller amount to a positive value). For example, when the kick hits, give an slightly increase to the HH high-end.
