Thanks. I have created a MATLAB script which I can share which converts short samples to 4-bit PCM expressions at a selection of 8,4, or 2 kHz. It should also run on a freeware program called Octave, although I haven't tried installing Octave on this computer since I had to reinstall Windows just after installing an old version a couple of years ago. I'd be more than happy for anyone to convert it to C++ or HTML. This sound output (though 4 bit and not 8 bit) reminds me of sampling off the radio with my first sampler, which I had as a teenager (many years ago). The newer versions (nightly build) have changed the parsing to a type called ExprTk parsing (I wasn't aware of this until you pointed this out). This means any older Xpressive projects such as mine will have no speech (or other sounds with time segments) when played in newer versions.
